The Charlie chuckles club was a great think to do on a Sunday afternoon. I used to do all The puzzles in the Sunday papers. It was the highlight of my week as a child. I am now nearly 70 and would love to be able to get a Charlie chuckles badge. I lost mine. Even getting a stamp to post the letter in was amazing – no computers, no emails, nothing instant. It was called patience.
Hello Glenda only this evening I found a Charlie Chuckles Badge in my sewing box. I have had it for a number of years and it’s been packed away. Since I didn’t know what it was , I found you. Your welcome to the badge as I know it means a lot to you. Our child hood memories are the best aren’t they. I can send it to you but the way the mail is now I can only hope you get it. Can you please reply. Thank you Carol
Michael, just going through replies again. An aside– I do a lot of family history. I am descended from john small and Mary Parker, first Fleeters. Are we related? Glenda
HI Glenda. Not sure. Never had a lot of interest in that sort of thing. However I did have a distance relative do a pretty in depth tree but again, never really read it well. Michael
Hello Caro, MIchael, Glenda – sorry I haven’t paid much attention to this blog and I missed the offer to Glenda from Michael. Today I was alerted to Carol’s offer. Fantastic and I hope Glenda gets to see this and works out a way to accept your offers.

Hello Glenda,
I’ll send the Charlie Chuckles badge onto your address. I hope you enjoy having one back. I remember listening to Bob Dyer ‘Pick A Box’ with Dolly and the Jack Davies Show. But don’t remember Charlie Chuckles.
Regards Carol. PS let me know when it arrives.
Hello Glenda,
Would you believe the letter I posted to you on the 16th August with the Charlie Chuckles badge in it came back to me today saying, “NOT AT THIS ADDRESS”. Do you want me to try again and I’ll register it?
Carol, where do you live? In Australia I presume, in New South Wales?? I really appreciate all you have done for me. Just post normally again. I will verify my details.

Hi Glenda,
I live in WA and thought for sure the letter had been lost, as it took over 2 months to get back to me. The address is correct, so I’ll put it in another envelope and cross my fingers this time.
Carol
I have such happy childhood memories of doing all the Charlie Chuckles puzzles and competitions every Sunday! It was such a thrill when I received my certificates in the mail with gold stars on them! Thank you to my wonderful grandfather Walter Gray for introducing me to Charlie Chuckles in the mid to late 1960’s….the radio programs early Sunday mornings were also fantastic. Wish we could bring those innocent days back, thank you ❤️
Gaynor, lovely to read your story. Mine is very similar. It was the highlight of my week to sit and do the puzzles. I,would read the paper with my grandfather. Before tv. It taught us patience and resilience. Glenda
Can anyone tell me how I would get a copy of the Charlie Chuckles page from 1960? I sent my name in to the penfriends wanted section and started writing to a young girl in America. We have now visited each other many times and she is in Australia now and her children and Grandchildren are here and they want us to write down our story. 4 generations of family we have become through Charlie Chuckles…can anyone help? its an amazing story.
Sandy
The only thing I can suggest is either the State Library – though their collection of newspapers may be only available digitally (its used to be on microfische). Good luck.
Does anyone have any scans of the certificates they earned or membership card that came with the badge. I want to include in a book I am writing on the Radio Listener Clubs
Thank you very much Michael Parker. I appreciate you going to the trouble.
I must admit I have been confused by Charlie Chuckles.
Charlie Chuckle commenced in the Sunday Telegraph November, 1939. Same day the radio program started as well. Radio actors voice acted the comics for half an hour, different session times in different regions. This continued at least until 1954.
In 1954 the Comic Book Chucklers Weekly commenced and that was also where the club and badge commenced. In the comics there were competitions and you could earn certificates. Charlie Chuckle became Charlie Chuckles.
But was the badge and certificates part of the Sunday Telegraph or only the Charlie Chucklers comics?
Hi Ian.
I don’t know about the radio. All I can remember is the comics in the paper (can’t remember which one) that had puzzles and things you could enter. And this was in the mid to late 60’s. I actually bought my badge and the accompanying letter about two years ago off Ebay. They were both like new.
G’day Michael, I am still learning about Charlie Chuckles, there is a lot more to it than I originally thought. The letter you got really sounds interesting.

On my website I have the story of Charlie Chuckles as well as an episode of the Radio Program voice acting the comics

Will definitely have a look at your blog, Ian. Unfortunately none of my certificates survived. Good luck.
I’m pretty sure I still have a certificate. I will see if I can find it over the weekend
Thank you Karen, much appreciated.
I have the letter that came with the badge somewhere. Will have a look for it.
